Abstract

The article is focused on the analysis of the dynamics of basic approaches to the interpretation of the notion of mental lexicon. It is found out that the research of this notion became more intense due to keen interest in cognitive processes, with the advent of psycholinguistics, cognitive psychology, cognitive linguistics, generative grammar and lately researches in the sphere of artificial and machine intelligence. Also in the researches of semantic memory there dominate two approaches that differ according to their trends: associanistic approach (R. Solso’s term), which is concentrated onto the functional relations between notions and cognitive, which is focused onto the cognitive structures, that characterize relations between notion and memory. Cognitive models (namely, cluster model, group models, model of semantic characteristics, semantic network and neurocognitive models) systematize the data of semantic experiments, forming general theories of memory that further of gave stimuli to the question of knowledge categorization.
